The release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, book six in J.K. Rowling's fantasy series, is still many months away. Here are some great books to help time fly while you're waiting:
His Dark Materials (trilogy)
by Phillip Pullman
In the epic trilogy His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman unlocks the door to worlds parallel to our own. Dæmons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes--if it isn't destroyed first. The three books in Pullman's heroic fantasy series, published as mass-market paperbacks with new covers, are united here in one boxed set that includes The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. Join Lyra, Pantalaimon, Will, and the rest as they embark on the most breathtaking, heartbreaking adventure of their lives. --Amazon.com
Eragon (Inheritance, Book 1)
by Christopher Paolini
Here's a great big fantasy that you can pull over your head like a comfy old sweater and disappear into for a whole weekend. Christopher Paolini began Eragon when he was just 15, and the book shows the influence of Tolkien in its traditional quest structure and the generally agreed-upon nature of dwarves, elves, dragons, and heroic warfare with magic swords. Eragon, a young farm boy, finds a marvelous blue stone in a mystical mountain place. Before he can trade it for food to get his family through the hard winter, it hatches a beautiful sapphire-blue dragon, a race thought to be extinct. Eragon bonds with the dragon, and when his family is killed, he discovers that he is the last of the Dragon Riders, fated to play a decisive part in a coming war. --Amazon.com
A Series of Unfortunate Events
by Lemony Snicket
Make no mistake. A Series of Unfortunate Events begins badly for the three Baudelaire children, and then gets worse. Their misfortunes begin one gray day on Briny Beach when Mr. Poe tells them that their parents perished in a fire that destroyed their whole house. "It is useless for me to describe to you how terrible Violet, Klaus, and even Sunny felt in the time that followed," laments the personable (occasionally pedantic) narrator, who tells the story as if his readers are gathered around an armchair on pillows. But of course what follows is dreadful. --Amazon.com
The wait for book six is even more unbearable now that the title is revealed. Hopefully, you can fill some time by reading these other great series and books. We'll feature more here very soon, so check back often!
